NOTE: During 2019, The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) program changed its data source (such as adding Glassdoor and Indeed). While the HWOL series has maintained consistency in its methodology, the differences between the two data sources will impact the July 2019 report henceforth.
Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
- Austin added 27,200 net new jobs, or 2.5% in the 12 months ending in March 2020, making Austin the 6th fastest growing major metro. From February to March, job growth was negative for 40 of the top 50 metros, including Austin, which lost 6,900 or 0.6% (or 8,400 or 0.7% on a seasonally adjusted basis).
- There were approximately 64,700 Available Job Postings during the March 2020 monthly reporting period, an increase of 2,200 postings compared to the previous month.
- 18 percent or about 11,900 of the Available Job Postings during the March reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations followed by Management Occupations which represents about 13 percent or 8,400 of postings.
- According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 3.5% or 44,000 unemployed in March 2020, an increase of 10,500 unemployed people when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was 2.6% or 33,400 unemployed in February 2020. The current civilian labor force for the Austin MSA in February 2020 was 1,240,100.
- 37 percent or 23,700 of all Available Job Postings pay an annual median wage of between $30,000 to $65,000 in the Austin MSA for March 2020. Of the 23,700 posted jobs in this category and pay range, 19 percent or about 4,700 would require more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor's degree while 62 percent or 14,800 would require a high school diploma or less.
- There are about 492 "Work from Home" Available Job Postings in March 2020. Most are in industries related to Insurance Carriers, Software Publishers, Business Support Services, Management Scientific, and Technical Consulting Services, Medical Equipment and Supplies Manufacturing, Scientific Research and Development Services and Depository Credit Intermediation.
- More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 92 jobs. The expansion list includes Overhaul, Ooni, Novel Coworking, Membersy, Medici, Flex Health and Center for Autonomous Robotics.
