NOTE: During 2019, The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) program changed its data source (such as adding Glassdoor and Indeed). While the HWOL series has maintained consistency in its methodology, the differences between the two data sources will impact the July 2019 report henceforth.
Job Postings measured in this report refers to the employers who are actively advertising online, it is not a representation of Job Openings, which measures all positions that are open (not filled) on the last business day of the month.
There were approximately 51,900 Available Job Postings during the May 2020 monthly reporting period, a decrease of approximately 11,500 postings compared to the previous month. New Job Postings fell from 23,800 in April 2020 to 20,100 in May 2020.
23 percent or about 11,400 of the Available Job Postings during the May reporting period fell under Computer and Mathematical Occupations, increasing its percentage share of regional job postings. There were 4,500 New Job Postings for Computer and Mathematical Occupations in May. Management Occupations represents about 13 percent or 6,500 of the Available Job Postings. STEM occupations account for over 11% of all jobs in the Austin MSA, making Austin the 6th most concentrated in STEM among large U.S. metros. There was a decrease of about 430 New Job Postings by General Medical and Surgical Hospitals between April 2020 and May 2020.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Austin MSA reported an unemployment rate of 12.2% or 138,100 unemployed in April 2020, an increase of 90,700 unemployed people when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate was 3.8% or 47,400 unemployed in March 2020. The current civilian labor force for the Austin MSA in April 2020 is 1,132,900, a decrease of 103,100 when compared to March 2020. The Leisure and Hospitality industry shrunk the most by 45.6% followed by Other Services which saw a decrease of 28.9% and this includes occupations related to Repair and Maintenance, Personal and Laundry Services, Religious Organizations and Private Households.
According to Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, "Workers with college degrees and those earning $60,000 or more are far more likely to be in jobs for which remote working is an option than those without a degree or earnings less than $60,000. Austin has the highest percentage (48 percent) of workers with a remote working option; Dallas (42 percent) and Houston (40 percent) are just behind." Approximately 38 percent of full-time workers in Texas hold remote-compatible jobs. There are about 780 "Work from Home" New Job Postings in May 2020 and are mostly in occupations related to Computer and Mathematical, Sales and Related, Management, Office and Administrative Support and Business and Financial Operations.
More jobs ahead. Companies have recently announced new relocation or expansion plans in the Austin MSA, representing about 1,890 jobs. LPL Financial (San Diego, CA), Kitchen United (Pasadena, CA), HumanCo (New York, NY) and Ethos Technologies (San Francisco, CA) are the companies that have announced new location plans in Austin. The expansion list includes Texas Children's Hospital, Magnitude Software, Homeward, Dell's Children's Hospital, Cloudflare, Ambrust American, Apple and Accruent.
