In this final session of the 5-session Bricks and Mortar series, Nina and Jen will discuss how to assess and hire the General Contractor and what to expect during the construction period through move-in.

This session will cover:

· When to bring your contractor on board and how to qualify them

· Understanding preliminary budgets and cost estimates

· What to know about contingency funding and change orders

· Typical contents of the Owner-Contractor agreement

· What to expect during construction

· Tips to having a successful construction period (including post-construction followups)

Attendees will leave with useful sample documents and insights into how to optimize the construction period for their bricks and mortar location.

Nina Murrell, Founding Principal Architect of MODA | Murrell Office for Development and Architecture LLC, is a registered Texas architect with nearly 30 years of experience with commercial, institutional, and residential clients. Nina has a passion for teaching newcomers to the design and construction process how to launch and succeed in developing new and expanded bricks and mortar locations. Her projects have included lease space fit-outs and new construction for retail, restaurant/brewery, office, and industrial clients as well as acclaimed music venues, art museums and galleries, and amenities-rich RV resorts.

Jennifer Garrett, CEO of The Kidd Group, a general construction company based in Austin, holds a BS in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University. Jen spent 15 years in the high-tech industry and on the side, she started a residential general contracting and interior design company. Her passion for construction grew as she saw the need for improved communication and project management skills in the construction industry. In 2019 she bought part of a commercial construction company and developed their residential arm while helping grow the commercial side. Jen wants to live in a world filled with ambitious individuals and innovative businesses, clear and timely communication in the construction industry, and a cure for allergies and traffic.
