High performers in the workplace are often promoted to management positions based on their track records and proven dedication. It can be a highly effective strategy to tap an outstanding team member for a leadership role, since they already know and understand organizational processes and usually have good working relationships with their colleagues. However, there can be setbacks and stumbles if the new leader is unprepared for the transition.

Management requires an added set of skills — and comes with different obstacles — than working as an individual contributor. I often see stellar employees promoted to managerial positions. The new managers who succeed are the ones who came into the role well-prepared. Transitioning from being an individual contributor to a manager involves a whole new set of skills, such as leadership, communication, delegation, and conflict resolution. That’s where initial and ongoing manager training can be invaluable.
