No Comment? STOP!
We’ve all seen it. A guilty “looking” business leader or politician puts their hand up to the camera and keeps repeating “no comment." Reporters will smell blood in the water and begin to circle.
Over my years working alongside Dan Rather and team at “60 Minutes,” when a company or high profile leader said "no comment" or wouldn’t agree to an interview it was, more often than not, a sign that they were hiding something. In one sad case, we were working on a story about a trade association and a set of controversial industry standards. They agreed to an interview, but only if we spoke to "Janice" (a pseudonym). Come to find out, the day before our interview, "Janice" was promoted to Chief of Something-or-Other. We showed up with Dan Rather and Janice folded under the pressure. Flop sweat, stammering, she lost the ability to put a sentence together. In this case - and only this case - no comment might have been a better option.
